Compare the problem, not just the sector
A document analysis system and a natural-language analytics product are different. They may still share retrieval, evaluation and production operations. Identify the overlap and its boundary.
Name what transfers
Be specific: “Has operated LLM infrastructure at scale” is a useful hypothesis. “Strong AI background” is too broad to test. Keep the original CV passage attached.
Name what does not transfer automatically
Domain rules, safety responsibilities, specialist tools and independent ownership still matter. A second look should expose these gaps clearly, not lower the bar invisibly.
Use the first call to test the bridge
Ask how the candidate would adapt their approach to the new problem. Listen for what they would need to learn as well as what they already know. A precise limit can be more informative than a sweeping claim.
